barack obama and former massachusetts governor mitt romney. the stage is ready in denver, colorado. the university of denver. and all of the expectations management to the contrary, the two men you're going to see tonight are very good debaters. they have four ivy league degrees between them, after all, and 50 debates between them, though not against each other until tonight. there is a critical third man on that stage tonight in denver. that's the moderator, jim lehrer of pbs. he's done a dozen of these. and the rules, which he will announce at the start, give him broad leeway to guide the conversation and the debate. it is a cold room in denver. the campaigns wanted the temperature low. and it's not likely to stay that way once we get under way. both men have been prepping for days. this happens to be the obamas' 20th wedding anniversary. moments ago we saw a warm embrace between mrs. romney and mrs. obama. they both met each other at the front of the hall. their hiss, this is the first of three meetings debate style between these candidates. even though voting is under way in 34

. let's show the tips you have for governor romney about the type of performance he needs to deliver on. don't try too hard. don't get too snippy. this is a tall order. you are trying to see mitt romney cast that leadership vision and in an area where there's a lot of pressure. >> they telegraph it, romney has these zinger plan, but i think the risk is that he gets too desperate to have a big moment and that he overplays his hand. and if you look back at mitt romney's performance in the primaries, he did have a tendency to get snippy, and he already has some under water numbers on likability. the third on specifics is the very small number of undecided voters left. when they're asked why they're undecided, they say they want specifics about the plans of both of the candidates. so i think mitt romney can want get away from getting away from some specific data points. >> there will interesting to see how he gets his voice heard. american cross roads is out with a new ad hitting the president on his record. >> if you don't have a record to run on, then you paid your opponent as someone peo

for president that we have faced in my memory. now that governor romney has made it official and he has picked paul ryan and i mean this sincerely, these are both good family man and bay --no, i don't need your boos, we need your help. i want to be strict review -- -- i want to be straight with you. i have a bad reputation for being strait, telling you what i think. sometimes all of us -- all kidding aside, picking paul ryan, what governor romney did is he has given clear definition to all those big assertions he was making during his primary campaign. he talked a lot about a lot of things that paul ryan is talking about but the war in many details. by picking paul ryan and laying out why he was picking him, he picked paul ryan because paul ryan represents the ideological -- how can i say it -- the center of the republican party and the house of representatives. he said that is why he is picking him. now we don't have to guess about what governor running means when he talks about medicare vaguely and social security and education and all these things. it is almost like two incumbents running.
